Brunel Hurricanes vs Loughborough Lightning
21st December 2008
Brunel Huricanes 34 - 43 Loughborough Lightning
Despite having to travel to Guildford with a depleted squad through illness and injury, Lightning were adamant that they would finish the first half of the season on a positive note.
Brunel made a strong start to the game taking their first centre pass to goal with relative ease. Lightning knew the game would not be easy and had to graft from the start to keep possession of the ball and take it to the goal circle. James (GS) and Harten (GA) had to work hard to try and create space in the shooting circle, that was often filled with the long arms of the Hurricanes defensive pair. The Lightning defence were relentless in the pressure they applied to Brunel and forced numerous turnovers. Although the attack were beginning to work together more effectively there were still unforced errors and loose passing that allowed hurricanes to stay in the game. Lightning leading 12-8 at quarter time.
Brunel came out tough in the second quarter Sonia Mkoloma moved to GD leading her team to close the gap. Kara luck continued to make crucial interceptions for Lightning, however lots of physical pressure from Brunel helped them to win the quarter by one.
After the half time break lightning really started to pull away with changes made in the centre court and shooting circle being effective, Lighting showed there skills to put goals on the board with defence end working over-time. Lightning went into the fourth quarter 7 ahead.
Lightning kept the intensity into the final quarter with the attack using their vision to find Harten under the post. After patches of inconsistency from both sides Lightning regained their composure to win the quarter and secure another good victory.
