Lightning NTL v Celtic Dragons

5/12/09

Lightning NTL opened their account with a victory against Celtic Dragons in Sheffield, on a day that saw all NTL teams perform for the first time in the same venue.

There were plenty of nerves on display in the first few minutes of the game as both teams had brand new line ups. Celtic Dragons NTL put on a tight man to man defence across the mid court and Lightning NTL took time to adapt. The new Lightning defensive duo of Nicola Caunt and Rose Walker slowly took charge of the Celtic Shooters, and Nia Rawlins competing against her previous team showed composure under the post. Celtic lead at first quarter break 8-7.

Bev Burnham Lightning NTL Head Coach made changes through the mid court moving Rachel Bird to Centre and Natalie Ekweogwu in to WD. These changes had an instant impact defensively as Celtic Dragons were prevented from scoring for the first 7 ½ minutes of the quarter. Nia Rawlins still performing to the highest level with 100% shooting accuracy complemented the defenders hard work. Lightning stormed into a half time lead of 19-11.

The third quarter saw extensive changes in the Dragons line up after the defensive shut out in the previous quarter and Lightning chose to switch their GS & GA. The teams were now very evenly matched and the quarter went goal for goal. Dragons won the quarter by one, but Lightning maintained a strong advantage heading into the final period.

The final quarter again saw Nia Rawlins back in at GS and although error strewn Lightning managed to extend their lead. A final score line of 37-26 did not flatter Lightning, and coach Bev Burnham was very pleased to get the first victory of the season.

Shooting Statistics:

Nia Rawlins 22/27 81%
